In what is already being called one of the most shocking upsets in Winter Olympic history, heavily favored American figure skater Ilia Malinin suffered a disastrous collapse during the men's free skate final, falling completely off the podium to finish in eighth place.
Malinin, universally known as the "Quad God" and riding a two-plus-year unbeaten streak spanning 14 competitions, entered Friday night’s event with a comfortable five-point lead. He needed only a moderately clean skate to secure his anticipated coronation. Instead, the 21-year-old unraveled in a four-minute routine that left the star-studded crowd at the Milano Ice Skating Arena in stunned silence.
The Nightmare on Ice
The unraveling began almost immediately. Skating to atmospheric music that featured his own voiceover, Malinin opened strong with a quad flip. However, disaster struck when he approached his signature move—the quadruple axel, a jump only he has ever landed in competition. Seeming to panic mid-air, Malinin bailed out, popping it into a single axel and losing massive technical points.
The mistakes quickly compounded. He popped a planned quad loop into a double, fell hard to the ice on a quad lutz, and crashed again on a double salchow. By the time the music stopped, Malinin had given away roughly 70 points in jump values, covering his face in disbelief as the reality of the moment set in.
"I blew it," Malinin told reporters shortly after his scores were posted. "That's honestly the first thing that came to my mind. There's no way that just happened... It's the Olympics, and I think people don't realize the pressure and the nerves that actually happen from the inside. So it was really just something that overwhelmed me, and I just felt like I had no control."
A Stunned Arena
The atmosphere in the arena shifted from electric anticipation to pure heartbreak. The audience, which included 2022 Olympic champion Nathan Chen and seven-time Olympic gold medal gymnast Simone Biles, watched in shock as the generational talent fought back tears.
His final score of 264.49 was his lowest in nearly four years.
Kazakhstan Makes History
With the door blown wide open, 21-year-old Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan seized the moment. Delivering the skate of his life with five flawless quadruple jumps, Shaidorov posted a career-best 291.58 points to win the gold medal—the first-ever Olympic figure skating gold for Kazakhstan.
Japan's Yuma Kagiyama took silver for the second consecutive Olympics, while his teammate Shun Sato secured the bronze.
While Malinin still leaves Milan with a gold medal from the team event earlier in the week, his individual collapse will undoubtedly go down as one of the most dramatic and heartbreaking moments of the 2026 Games.
