Canadian authorities have identified the suspect behind the horrific school shooting in British Columbia that has left a nation in mourning. Police confirmed on Wednesday that 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar was the shooter responsible for the rampage that claimed the lives of at least nine people, including five children.
The tragedy unfolded in the remote community of Tumbler Ridge, approximately 600 miles north of Vancouver. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the violence began at a private residence where Van Rootselaar shot and killed her mother, 39-year-old Jennifer Strang, and her 11-year-old stepbrother.
The School Attack
Following the killings at her home, investigators say Van Rootselaar drove to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Armed with a long gun and a modified handgun, the suspect entered the building and opened fire, killing a 39-year-old teacher and five students aged 12 and 13.
The rampage ended when police found Van Rootselaar dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Suspect Details & Mental Health History
In a press conference, RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald revealed that Van Rootselaar had been known to police. Authorities had visited the suspect’s home on "multiple occasions" in recent years due to mental health concerns, including reports of a weapon.
Addressing questions about the suspect's identity, McDonald stated, "Jesse was born as a biological male who, approximately six years ago, began to transition to female and identified as female, both socially and publicly."
National Reaction
The massacre has sent shockwaves through Canada, a country where mass shootings are relatively rare. Prime Minister Mark Carney, who was scheduled to travel to Germany for the Munich Security Conference, immediately suspended his trip to address the crisis.
"This is an act of unheard-of cruelty," Prime Minister Carney said in an emotional address to Parliament. "Tumbler Ridge is a town of families who have always shown up for each other. Today, our entire country stands with you."
Carney has dispatched Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree to the community to coordinate federal support. Flags on all government buildings across Canada have been ordered to fly at half-mast.
